Being a Coach…As An Approach to Leadership

This session will present key elements of professional coaching and what it means to not just do coaching but to be a coach in any environment. The session will describe what coaching is, how it is different from therapy, counseling, mentoring, consulting, and other helping modalities, and will provide the opportunity for participants to practice coaching with each other. A brief history of coaching will be shared.

Coaching models and frameworks will be introduced, along with key principles of coaching to help ensure understanding of the coaching modality as distinct from other approaches. Resources for further education will also be shared.

Participants will be asked to bring a topic to the session around which they would like to be coached – business, personal, or other – which they are comfortable sharing with the group. Participants will be asked to download and read in advance two inexpensive initial readings:

Hall, Chad. (2015). The Coaching Mindset: 8 Ways to Think Like a Coach. Coach Approach Ministries.

Hall, Chad. (2016). Coach the Person, not the Problem. Coach Approach Ministries.

Note: This session is not designed to provide training to become a certified professional coach and does not carry any CCE – Continuing Coach Education – units from the ICF – International Coaching Federation.
