Rededication of the Palmer Park Community Center
Join Franklin Parks and Recreation, Leadership Johnson County Project Team (DREAM), esteemed guests, and community members as we rededicate the community center in honor of the former site of Booker T. Washington Colored School (1873-1951). This program will include the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard, living former Booker T. Washington students, a brief history of the Booker T. Washington Colored School, and the area school contest winners.
In addition to this rededication ceremony of the Palmer Park Community Center as the Booker T. Washington Community Center, this project highlights the history on this land and the individuals involved, both inside and outside. Outside, on the property of Palmer Park, follow the walking trail and learn about the following historical people of Johnson County as they relate to Palmer Park: Herriott Palmer, Booker T. Washington, Ethel Harnett, Hattie Fossett-Caine, Arthur Henry Wilson and George Marion Robinson. Inside the newly rededicated Booker T. Washington Community Center will be more in-depth stories of the former students.
This rededication is a project by members of the Leadership Johnson County Class of 2021. Our project mission is to create the DREAM – Diversity in Recreation for Education, Alliance, and Motivation – starting with Johnson County.
